Lamont Roach Jr has spoken out amid the uncertainty surrounding his rematch with Gervonta Davis.
The two men first met back in March, when Roach stepped up in weight to challenge ‘Tank’ for his WBA lightweight title at the Barclays Center in New York.
Most fans expected it to be a straightforward defence for Davis, but it turned out to be anything but that, with Roach pushing his rival all the way as the fight went the full 12-round distance.
Roach even could have had a knockdown scored in his favour in the ninth round when Davis voluntarily took a knee after being on the receiving end of a jab, but the referee decided not to count, with ‘Tank’ later claiming it was due to grease being in his eye.
That proved to be crucial to the outcome of the bout though, as it ended in a majority decision verdict, where a 10-8 round to Roach would have been enough to swing the scorecards his way.
Due to the controversy surrounding the fight, an immediate rematch was set to take place, with August 16 in Las Vegas earmarked as the proposed date and location for the fight.
An issue arose in the last few days though, after Davis was arrested on Friday on misdemeanour domestic violence charges, relating to an incident that occured near Miami, Florida, on June 15.
Despite the arrest, Roach has now claimed that the fight with his rival is still set to go ahead as planned.
“I heard from a little birdy that buddy home already. So for all you people that are saying “you’re not fighting, you’re not fighting.” He had a quick spa treatment and got the f**k out of there. I want to let you all know the fight is still on and is still scheduled for August 16.”
An official announcement on whether or not the fight will indeed take place next month is expected soon.
