An eight-year-old Namibian cheetah passed away on Saturday (July 12, 2025) in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP), a week after sustaining injuries inside her enclosure, forest officials said.
The female cheetah Nabha had been “badly injured probably during a hunting attempt inside her soft release boma (enclosure)”, and succumbed to the injuries during treatment, Uttam Kumar Sharma, Field Director, KNP, said.
“She had fracture in both Ulna and Fibula on the left side along with other injuries. She was under treatment for a week but succumbed to her injuries. Further detail will be known after the post-mortem report is received,” Mr. Sharma said in a statement.
After her death, Mr. Sharma said, Kuno now has 26 cheetahs, including six male and three female adults translocated from Africa, and 17 Indian-born cubs.

“All are healthy and doing well. Out of 26 cheetahs in Kuno National Park, 16 cheetahs are in the wild and are performing very well. They have adapted well to habitat of Kuno, have learned to live with co-predators and are regularly hunting,” the statement read.
The two cheetahs moved to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in April are also adapting to the conditions well, Mr. Sharma said.
Two South African six-year-old male cheetahs — Prabhas and Pawak — had been transferred to the sanctuary on April 20, making it their second home in India since the translocation of the species from the African continent in September 2022.
The Field Director said that anti ecto-parasitic medication was given to all the cheetahs recently to prevent them from developing parasitic infection such as ticks and mites.
“Two mothers, Veera and Nirva, along with their recently born cubs, are healthy and doing well,” Mr. Sharma said.
