Families headed for parks, beaches and lochs, while around 50,000 revellers partied it up at a sweltering TRNSMT festival at Glasgow Green.

Met Office weatherman Aiden McGivern said: “Despite the clear skies, it’s going to be an exceptionally warm night in many spots, particularly towards the west.

“Expect 18°C or 19°C and north-west Scotland could see temperatures holding up at 20°C or even 21°C.

“That’s getting close to Scotland’s warmest night on record.”

Experts say today was the warmest since July 2022 when temperatures reached an all-time high of 34.8C at Charterhall in the Scottish Borders

Aviemore in the Highlands was the hottest place in the country.

Four other areas, Achnagart  and Kinlochewe in Ross-shire, Dundreggan, in Inverness-shire, and Aboyne, in Aberdeenshire, all recorded over 30°C.

A few miles out of Aviemore, hundreds of day-trippers got up early to pack the beach at 10am at Loch Morlich, sitting beneath the Cairngorms and its last remaining patch of winter snow.

Visitors Beata and Igor Gazdzik were having fun paddleboarding in the water.

Beata said: “Luckily we got here early as the car park was full by 9.45am.

“The weather is glorious and being out on the loch is a great way of keeping cool.”

Igor added: “I am keeping my hat on all day as it’s so hot my head would burn.”

Mitch Jachacy, from Aviemore, was having fun jumping off his board into the loch to try and keep cool.

Tiffany Irvin, 41, runs the award-winning The Fish Works chip shop and the Beachcomber ice cream parlour and said it was ‘just like the old days’ as the Clyde Coast resort was thronged by visitors.

She said: “Because it’s so hot, everyone is going for the ice cream so far.

“The promenade is packed to capacity and families have even been putting up tents and gazebos on the grass.

“It’s just like the old days.

“We haven’t seen anything like this in decades.”

Sunseekers also dashed to Luss where they threw themselves into the water at Loch Lomond and children played in the sand.

In Glasgow, TRNSMT’s second day saw security guards turn hoses on the crowd to keep revellers cool.
