In a country where the spirit of entrepreneurship thrives beyond metro cities and glossy boardrooms, Muthoot FinCorp has launched the SPARK Awards, a pioneering initiative aimed at recognising and empowering India’s vast and often overlooked community of micro and small entrepreneurs. The flagship company of Muthoot Pappachan Group – the business conglomerate with a strong legacy of nearly 140 years and a vast branch and digital network, Muthoot FinCorp aims to spotlight the stories of everyday business heroes who are driving real economic impact across the nation.

In an exclusive conversation with Adgully, Shaji Varghese, CEO, Muthoot FinCorp, delves into the vision behind SPARK Awards, its scale, impact, and how it aligns with the company’s larger mission of serving the underserved.

“After agriculture, the largest employment sector in India is the micro and small entrepreneurs,” Shaji Varghese notes. “They are the backbone of the economy, contributing significantly to job creation, exports, and GDP growth. Yet, they rarely receive the recognition they deserve.”

He explains that among India’s 6 crore MSMEs, a vast majority operate below the ₹20 lakh turnover mark. “They’re not part of GST filings or the formal banking system, and still, their innovations, risk taking, and contributions are immense. SPARK Awards is our way of honouring them.”

With a network of over 3,700 branches and a rapidly growing digital footprint, Muthoot FinCorp is uniquely positioned to reach deep into rural and semi-urban India. “We understand the credit needs of this segment,” says Varghese. “We’ve built tailored offerings, short-term working capital loans with daily repayment to match their cash flow, loan against property to meet long term requirements, and channel financing, keeping their unique challenges in mind.”

This reach is being leveraged for SPARK Awards to drive participation from across India’s pincodes. “We want thousands to participate, not just 28 winners. Our goal is to make this the largest recognition platform for micro-entrepreneurs,” he adds.

The SPARK Awards will honour 28 national winners across seven categories:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Woman Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Emerging Leader of the Year
  • Innovator of the Year
  • Tech Trailblazer
  • Social Impact Leader
  • Fastest Growing Business

These awards span key sectors such as textile & apparel, food processing, FMCG, agriculture, consumer durables & electronics, and automobiles. Importantly, Varghese emphasises that this isn’t a one-night event. “We aim to create local champions across geographies, with certificates of recognition and on-ground celebrations, not just a central ceremony in a five-star venue.”

Adding glamour to the grit is Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, who is associated with the awards. “He symbolises self-made success, much like our participants. His presence will inspire countless others to dream bigger,” shares Varghese.

The awards don’t end with a trophy. The 28 winners will gain access to mentorship and knowledge-sharing platforms, featuring industry experts and successful entrepreneurs. “Today, they may be micro, but their potential is massive. We’ll support them with tools to manage growth, scale operations, and even learn from each other,” he says.

Muthoot FinCorp is also committed to building a community, where success stories are shared and used as motivation for others. “Some of these winners will become case studies and mentors for future participants.”

As the awards were conceptualised, two critical insights emerged:

Accessibility & Scale: “We realised most existing awards don’t reach beyond the metros. We want to change that. Every branch is mobilised to spread awareness and assist in participation.”

Data Limitations: “Many micro-entrepreneurs lack structured data or documentation. So, we’ve created assisted digital application processes and partnered with external knowledge experts for independent jury evaluations,” says Varghese.

For Muthoot FinCorp, the SPARK Awards are not a one-off campaign, they’re the beginning of a sustained journey. “This is not an event; it’s a movement,” Varghese asserts. “As a company nearing 140 years of legacy, our purpose has always been to serve the common man. Empowering micro-entrepreneurs is in our DNA.”

Through visibility, recognition, mentorship, and long-term support, Muthoot FinCorp is positioning itself not just as a financial partner, but as an enabler of India’s entrepreneurial dreams.
