Emergency services raced to Waverley Station at 3pm after they received reports that a 78-year-old man had taken ill, sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An Edinburgh pensioner has died near a busy Scots train station prompting cops to race to the scene.

The 78-year-old took unwell at a premises on Princes Street during the afternoon of Wednesday, April 16. Emergency services rushed to the popular shopping area in the capital at 3pm but sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 3pm on Wednesday, 16 April, 2025, police received a report of a man becoming unwell at a premises on Princes Street, Edinburgh. Emergency services attended and the man, aged 78, was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Police have confirmed they believe there to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. They added: “There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

It comes as a pensioner tragically died in a horror car smash while the driver fights for his life in hospital.

The incident involving a 76-year-old woman and the 78-year-old driver took place on Corsebar Road in Paisley at around 12.30pm on Tuesday 15 April, and involved a silver Kia Ceed which veered off the road before smashing into a wall. Emergency services rushed to the scene where the 76-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead. The driver of the car remains in a critical condition in hospital. The road was closed until around 6.25pm to allow cops to probe the scene and has since fully reopened. Sergeant Ally Wright said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman involved.

“Our investigation to establish the full circumstances is ongoing and I would urge anyone with information, or who may have dash-cam footage from the area, to get in touch.”

Five people were also rushed to hospital on Friday as a result of a horror four-vehicle crash in the M9 at Stirling.

A stretch of the motorway was closed on April 11 after the collision on the northbound carriageway, between junctions 9 and 10.

The section remained closed for a number of hours as police carried out their investigation as drivers were asked to use alternative routes where possible.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 12.04pm hours on Friday to attend an incident on the M9.

“We dispatched a number of resources, including four ambulances and our special operations team, with our first resource arriving on scene within a minute.

“We transported five patients to Forth Valley Royal Hospital while a further three patients were treated and discharged at the scene.
