Amaal Mallik Reveals Doctors Advised Him To Stay Away From Music While Battling Clinical Depression
Amaal Mallik, the talented singer-composer and elder brother of Armaan Malik, recently made headlines after candidly speaking about his struggles with depression and conflicts within his family. Back in March, he shocked fans with a heartfelt social media post revealing his diagnosis of clinical depression and expressing feelings of emotional distance from his family, including Armaan. He attributed part of the tension to their parents, Daboo and Jyoti Malik. Although he later deleted the post, it had already stirred conversations.
Amaal Mallik shares his experience battling clinical depression In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal opened up about the mental and physical toll of clinical depression. He said, “It is a medical condition for sure. It is also very much a condition linked to the elements of the body, where nourishment is lacking—deficiencies of iron, potassium, and many other things had started. This began happening to me because I started eating less during the 2020 lockdown. COVID happened to me three times, and it affected my entire digestive system. I think that in the whole process, when you’re unwell, it affects your mind too. The chemical levels in the body change.”
“It started happening every day after 6 o’clock, after sunset. I’d feel this soul-sinking sensation—life suddenly wouldn’t feel good. It went on for a year, and then it got a little better. I think it’s a process. When it first hits you, you don’t even realize it. I felt I needed to rediscover everything about myself.”
“My doctor told me, ‘You need to take a break. Get out of the studio. Go to Lonavala, go anywhere. Be on the move. And if music is troubling you, don’t do it. Don’t sit every day and try to make a song. Find out who you are apart from music.’”
