The urology department at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which delivers care across Southport, Ormskirk, Whiston and St Helens hospitals, received the honour at the trust’s annual staff awards.
Rob Cooper, chief executive of the trust, said: “Our Urology Service is renowned across the region for being at the forefront of innovation, delivering exceptional standards of quality care to those who need it.
“To be crowned Team of the Year is an extraordinary achievement, and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved.
“It is thoroughly deserved.”
The team was praised for its patient-centred approach and clinical excellence, with patients describing them as ‘the NHS at its best’.
They were the first in the North of England to introduce Aquablation therapy at Whiston Hospital.
This is a robotic treatment for men with enlarged prostates.
Patients have described the treatment as “life-changing”.
The team at Ormskirk Hospital also recently carried out their first HoLEP procedure.
The award was presented by Liverpool Football Club legend John Barnes.
Two other teams were also shortlisted for the award.
The Dermatology Department was recognised as a centre of excellence, introducing new pathways and improved treatments for patients with complex skin conditions.
The St Helens Community District Nursing Team was also shortlisted.
They were praised for their impact on patient care across the community.
The team manages chronic conditions, provides end-of-life care, and responds to urgent clinical needs around the clock.
