London Southend Airport is closed until further notice following a small plane crash today, Sunday, July 13.

Emergency services were called after the aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from the Essex airport this afternoon.

A cordon remains in place and people are being urged to avoid the area.

There is currently no confirmation on casualties as a result of the incident, which saw a plume of black smoke rising from the wreckage of the crash.

The airport is mainly used by easyJet flights to and from popular holiday destinations including Alicante, Gran Canaria and Malaga.

In a statement on Sunday evening, a Southend Airport spokesperson said: “Due to a serious incident today London Southend Airport, we regret to advise that the airport is closed until further notice.

“All flights to and from the airport have been cancelled while police, emergency services and air accident investigators are attending the incident.
