If you’re a Sheffield Wednesday fan eager for news of new arrivals at the club, there is good news; but there’s a catch.

With a three-window transfer ban hanging over their heads, it’s not surprising that Sheffield Wednesday have been a little quiet in the summer window.

The Owls are losing players, though. Anthony Musaba is the first significant Sheffield Wednesday outgoing, while Djeidi Gassama and Max Lowe could soon follow him out the door.

While the club deals with a potential takeover and the return of Danny Rohl this week, there is also news of a possible new signing, but it won’t exactly get fans excited.

As per a report from The Star, it appears Sheffield Wednesday had a new recruit on trial during their training camp at St. George’s Park last week.

Mohamed Konate spent the week training with the Owls after being released from Portuguese side SC Covilha. However, it is not known at this time whether the 20-year-old midfielder will sign with Wednesday or not.

The Ivorian only joined Covilha in December but was on a short-term deal that was not extended. That is despite the youngster scoring two goals in ten games and helping the team stay up.

Given the chaos in S6 right now, it may be the case that Rohl is given time to settle back in before we see any progress on new signings. But, the fact the club is even looking and taking players on trial must surely be some small semblance of positivity right now.

The problem for Owls fans will be that, if Konate wasn’t good enough to be retained by a third-tier Portuguese side, what hope does he have of succeeding in the Championship?

There are plenty of solid free agents in the Championship that Wednesday could target. With the way the squad is shaping up right now, the Owls will need much more quality and experience, and cannot afford to gamble on someone like Konate.

Wednesday have given new contracts to youth players this summer, which suggests the club is tentatively planning for a scenario where its top young talents become more important in the season ahead.

That would be all well and good if Rohl was introducing one or two youth stars to the first-team, but with players departing and no one of note coming in, the Owls will surely be doomed to relegation in 2025/26. That is, unless Tilman Fertitta swoops in and saves the day.
