Rangers have added another new face to Russell Martin’s big summer rebuild after thrashing out a £2.5m deal for Djeidi Gassama.

Record Sport can confirm an official announcement unveiling the winger as Martin’s seventh signing is expected in the next 24 hours after the deal was finally agreed in principle with the owners of crisis ravaged Sheffield Wednesday.

It’s believed there are still some relatively ‘minor issues’ still to be concluded but the 21-year-old is expected to make his way to Glasgow to put pen to paper on a four year deal before joining up with Martin’s pre-season preparations at Auchenhowie.

Wednesday have been attempting to drive up the fee as the stricken Hillsborough outfit battle to emerge from the financial meltdown which has led to a number of the club’s big earners going without pay.

They had hoped to attract rival bidders to the negotiating table at the 11th hour but it’s understood an agreement with the Ibrox club has now been secured with Paris St Germain graduate Gassama being granted permission to travel north.

Rangers snapped up Lyall Cameron on a pre-contract from Dundee midway through last season and, since his appointment as Philippe Clement’s successor, Martin has recruited Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth, Luton’s Thelo Aasgaard and Manny Fernandez from Peterborough.

The new boss has also brought in Max Aarons and Nasser Djiga on season long loan deals from Bournemouth and Wolves respectively as he attempts to put together a squad capable of mounting a credible title challenge.

It’s understood the former Scotland defender hopes to add at least one more wide man to his group as well as a new striker.

Rangers have been linked with a potential loan move for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Israeli frontman Dor Turgeman as the clock races down towards next Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier against Greek big guns Panathinaikos.
