There were ‘severe delays’ across the network

Video footage has captured the moment passengers on board Metrolink services in Manchester were seen jumping off into the street amid long queues and delays on Monday (July 14).

There were ‘severe delays’ across the whole network throughout the day after a points issue at Victoria station caused a ‘back log’ of trams.

There was major disruption on Monday morning with no services between three major city centre tram stops. Commuters were told to expect delays with no service between Victoria and Exchange Square, and Deansgate Castlefield from around 6.15am.

The disruption came amid a faulty tram and affected ‘all stops’ on all lines, according to the Bee Network.

A points failure at Victoria slowed trams getting into the station which further worsened the back log. The issue was fixed later in the day, but a queue of trams were seen lining Moseley Street due to the back log, with delays across multiple lines.

As of 4pm, there were still issues along multiple lines. The incident affected the Ashton-Under-Lyne to Eccles line; Altrincham to Bury line; Manchester Airport to Victoria line; East Didsbury to Rochdale Town Centre line and The Trafford Centre to Deansgate-Castlefield line.

Tickets were being accepted on other local bus routes as an alternative for passengers.

A post shared on X by the Bee Network read: “Due to earlier incidents, we’re experiencing delays to tram services across the full network. We’re sorry for any disruption to your journey.”
