Closures on some of Bristol’s busiest roads are set to cause travel chaos from today (July 14). Work is starting on programmes in north Bristol, Bath New Bridge near Temple Meads and on Whiteladies Road.

The A4018 Passage Road in north Bristol is closed southbound between Crow Lane roundabout and Charlton Road until August 1. A section of the road which was originally constructed with poor quality materials will be rebuilt.

The three- week closure is part of an overall project to improve the reliability of the number 1 bus service through Henbury, and to make cycling safer.

While the road is closed, traffic will need to follow a diversion via Crow Lane, Henbury Road, and Falcondale Road for onward travel.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the road. The larger £6m project, which started in December 2024, has been blamed for causing traffic congestion and travel chaos along the busy commuter road

Over 3,000 angry petitioners recently called for an end to the ‘madness’ of the Henbury project.

Meanwhile, Bath New Bridge near Temple Meads station will be down to one lane until spring 2026 for essential repairs. The partial closure will cause significant delays for drivers approaching the city centre on the A4.

The bridge’s repair forms part of Bristol City Council ’s £16 million New Cut bridges restoration programme. The nearby Banana Bridge reopened on June 20, five months ahead of schedule.

There will be no right turn from St Luke’s Road or from Spring Street on to York Road and no left turn from Bath New Bridge on to Clarence Road.

Finally, works began on Monday to prevent flooding and improve walking and cycling along a section of Whiteladies Road.

The lower part of the road is particularly prone to flooding and the trees alongside it and their roots have made the pavement uneven, so the pavements will be repaved and raised.

As part of the Whiteladies works, which are scheduled to last until the end of 2025, contractors will add a separated cycleway on both sides of the road at the same height as the pavements. “Beany block kerbs’ that combine the roadside kerbs with a built-in drainage system will be installed, and the road resurfaced

To enable the work to take place, Whiteladies Road will close one-way travelling northbound from Victoria Methodist Church to its junction with Tyndalls Park Road and St Pauls Road. It will remain closed throughout the project.
