People travelling on Merseyrail today will be faced with major disruption as one line has been forced to cut services short. The train operator announced on its website that due to signalling issues there is currently disruption between Southport and Freshfield on the Southport line.

This disruption is expected to last until 3pm, with trains to Southport having been suspended between Formby and Southport. As a result, rail replacement buses have been put in place in both directions until further notice.

Merseyrail tickets are also being accepted on Arriva bus services 42, 47, 49 and 300, as well as Stagecoach service X2.

Services have been affected since 6.32am, with a flurry of cancellations hitting services between Liverpool Central and Southport as a result.

Merseyrail continued to say Northern Rail has granted ticket acceptance for Merseyrail tickets holders between Southport/Wigan and Wigan/Liverpool Lime Street.

On its website, Merseyrail said: “Due to signalling problems between Southport and Freshfield the Southport line is disrupted. Disruption is expected until 15:00 16/07.

“Impact: Train services to Southport have been suspended between Formby and Southport.

“Customer Advice: Replacement road transport services are conveying passengers between Formby and Southport in both directions until further notice.

“Additional Information: Merseyrail tickets are currently being accepted on Arriva Bus services 42 47 49 300 also Stagecoach service X2.”

Writing on X, Merseyrail listed the following services as being cancelled:

  • 06:32 Liverpool Central to Southport
  • 06:36 Southport to Liverpool Central
  • 06:47 Liverpool Central to Southport
  • 07:32 Liverpool Central to Southport
  • 07:36 Southport to Liverpool Central
  • 07:51 Southport to Liverpool Central
