A popular Bristol business is closing the doors to its site in Wapping Wharf after eight years. The Bristol Cheesemonger, which also has a store on Gloucester Road in the city, shared an announcement to its fans and followers on social media on Tuesday (July 15).
In it the team shared a photo of their Wapping Wharf store and wrote: “We are saying goodbye to Wapping Wharf after eight years. We have met so many amazing people over the years who have been drawn to Wapping Wharf as an exciting innovative part of the Bristol food scene.
“It continues to be one of the best places to eat in the UK and we will certainly miss all the people there.
“For our Central and South Bristol customers, we offer local delivery, but we look forward to seeing you up in Gloucester Road where we can raise a glass together!”

The team went on to say: “Despite it being a tough decision, we are excited for the next chapter. We are fizzing with ideas for our Gloucester Road branch, so keep your eyes peeled in the next couple of months to see what we are up to.”
Fans were quick to share their thoughts on the announcement, with one calling it the “end of an era” but also the “beginning of a new one on Gloucester Road”. A second said: “Well based on our experience of Gloucester Road last week, the future will be amazing!

“Lovely space, delicious cheese and drinks and the most wonderful staff! Best of luck.”
While a third commented: “I’ll miss that little Cargo unit. Excited for your new adventures.”
The Bristol Cheesemonger opened their Gloucester Road store in October 2024, in the formers site of Brewers Droop near the Co-op, marking their second and much larger store in the city.
The award-winning cheese shop, owned by husband and wife team Jenny and Oli, is described as being not only a British cheese specialist, but also having a focus on ‘seasonality and smaller production cheeses – predominantly cheese from the South West’. Jenny and Oli spend their time visiting farms and dairies, where they taste test before bringing back some of the best produce to sell in store.
All their cheeses are ‘carefully sourced and hand picked from artisan cheese makers from around the UK’, but are again ‘primarily from the South West’. The couple took on the ownership of The Bristol Cheesemonger back in 2021, with its founder Rosie Morgan, who had started the business as a small table of goods in the corner of Hart’s Bakery before growing into a market stall, pop-up and later shops, selling it to the pair.
This news comes just weeks after food critic Grace Dent described Wapping Wharf and the Cargo development as being a ‘true independent food destination in its own right’, dubbing it the ‘Bristol Riviera’ and mentioning: “By day there’s also a bakery, a butcher, a fromagerie and so on.”
