A restaurant in Staple Hill which was formerly a popular pub in the area, has opened a brand new outdoor private dining space.

Multi award-winning cafe bar and restaurant, The Forge & Fern, opened on the site of the old 19th Century Red Lion pub back in July 2022 and now, almost three years later, it has welcomed its first major update to the site.

Bristol-based The Forges Group originally developed the pub site on Broad Street, by adding a terrace, sunken gin distillery, and even a living wall, which many locals will recognise as they walk by.

Described as ‘an elegant venue for every occasion’, the team’s new feature – The HiveAway – is the first major update since its opening, described as a covered space ready to welcome up to 80 guests.

It boasts heating and comfortable seating, and is also dubbed as being ‘the perfect setting to host special events, no matter the season, an ideal space for intimate celebrations or larger gatherings alike’.

The interior decor will change to reflect each season – it currently features rugs on the floor, flowers on tables, and soft lighting, for spring.

The HiveAway was named by one of the restaurant’s regular guests in an Instagram competition, in which they won a meal for two.

It reflects the restaurant‘s rooftop beehives that supply honey for its popular Bee High Tea.

Jon Hutchings, The Forges group manager said: “The HiveAway offers a versatile space that can be tailored to suit a wide range of events – baby showers and gender reveals, birthdays & anniversaries, engagement parties, christenings, wedding celebrations, wakes or private dining.

“Our team are ready to make your milestone moments truly special.

“No matter the event, our team is here to work with you every step of the way to ensure a seamless and unforgettable experience.”

The HiveAway will offer a range of flexible hire packages.

In addition to this, you can still enjoy the menu at The Forge & Fern.

It serves up everything from small plates and sandwiches, to brunch dishes, burgers, fish ‘n’ chips, Asian cuisine, steaks, and a vast array of desserts, at time of writing.

Plus, there’s even a separate breakfast menu, a Sunday roast (which we’ve tried and thoroughly enjoyed before), cocktails and a fully-stocked bar, and that Bee High Tea (served every Saturday, 2-5pm and filled with afternoon tea treats and plenty of honey).
