Brendan Rodgers was delighted to see his Celtic side return to winning ways in pre-season.

Celtic beat Sporting CP 2-0 at the Estadio Algarve in their best performance of pre-season so far.

Reo Hatate and Luke McCowan got the goals for the Bhoys where the majority of the starting XI played 70 minutes.

Benjamin Nygren impressed Celtic fans but striker Adam Idah was on the receiving end of criticism from supporters.

Crucially, it’s more minutes in the tank and the Hoops boss was very pleased with what he saw.

Even though the Bhoys got themselves two goals on the night, there could’ve been plenty more added had the finishing been there.

Rodgers pointed this out and even though he was impressed with what he saw, it was clear that he wants to see more quality.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel after the game, he said: “Some of our football was outstanding.

“We maybe lacked a little bit in the final third of the pitch, at times, just to finish off some great moves but other than that it was a great workout.

“We scored two goals but could’ve had more.”

When is Celtic’s next game?

Fans won’t have long to wait for the Bhoys to be back in action as they return to Glasgow to play at Celtic Park for the first time in the 2025/26 season as they host Newcastle United on 19 July.

This will allow Celtic’s summer signings to play in front of the home faithful for the first time which will include a second home debut for Kieran Tierney.

There may even be chance to see Shin Yamada in action for the first time after Kawasaki Frontale confirmed Yamada would be leaving the club.
