The Northern Lights were visible in parts of Wales on Wednesday night. The nation has recently enjoyed rare views of the Northern Lights, with bright displays visible even in southern areas. The unusual spectacle is due to increased solar activity, as the sun nears the peak of its 11-year cycle.

Strong solar storms have pushed the aurora further south than normal, creating a stunning night skies across the UK. And there could be more to come, as experts say more displays could follow in the coming months.

Here’s the sight that many were treated to in Undy, Monmouthshire last night.

These pictures, taken by our photographer Jonathan Myers, show the stunning sight that was visible over fields in the south east Wales village.

It follows beautiful displays on the first day of astronical spring last month, which you can see here.

There were reports that the spectacle could also be seen in other areas of Wales last night, including Bwlch.

Pink shades lit up the night sky as many grabbed their cameras to capture the rare sighting. The Met Office’s space weather forecast had predicted sightings in the UK earlier this week.

It read: “The aurora is expected to be at normal background levels until the arrival of a Coronal Mass Ejection, most likely later on Tuesday UTC (April 15) and continuing into Wednesday (April 16).”

It added: “This is likely to bring the auroral oval to northern parts of the UK and similar geomagnetic latitudes, with a chance of some visibility towards the northern horizon for much of England.

“However, cloud cover over much of the UK will limit aurora viewings. The auroral oval will ease to background levels thereafter.”
