Real Madrid would have repotedly been interested in signing Mohamed Salah on a free transfer if he didn’t sign a new Liverpool contract. The 32-year-old committed his future to the Reds after he penned a two-year deal last Friday.
Salah’s contract was due to run out in June and there was talk that he could leave Anfield for fee this summer. However, the Egyptian instead signed a new contract to remain on Merseyside until at least 2027.
And according to the Daily Mail, noises were coming from Real around the turn of the year that there was an expectation the Egyptian would sign fresh terms at Liverpool.

It’s added that Los Blancos would have been keen on signing the most sought-after Bosman had Salah’s contract elapsed. But Real were not offered that encouragement and decided against pursuing a move for Salah.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, were not so accepting of his desire to stay at Liverpool. As late as last Wednesday, Al Hilal, it is claimed, thought they still had a chance of securing his signature.
And the news that Salah was going to commit to Liverpool left Al Hilal ‘crushed’. Speaking after signing his new Liverpool contract, Salah told the club’s official channels: “Of course I’m very excited. We have a great team now.
“Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.
“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.
“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
Salah is enjoying a career-best season. He has scored 32 times and provided 23 assists in 46 matches across all competitions. He is the outright top scorer in the Premier League and has also provided the most assists.
Reflecting on Salah’s new contact in a press conference last week, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said: “Happy of course. He’s shown at this club for so many years in a row now how much value he has for the team and for the club.
“As are all the fans and his team-mates, we are very happy he has extended for two more years. Hopefully he can show on Sunday [against West Ham,] how important he has been for the whole season to us.
“For the fans, it’s a relief. I don’t think it’s a surprise to you that I knew a bit better how his contract situation went over the course of the whole season. I knew for a while that things were heading in the right direction.
“It’s also a big compliment for Richard Hughes to extend Mo Salah, who is such a great player and as a free agent can probably go to any club in the world, wherever he wants to, but he stayed at our club. That’s also a compliment for Richard Hughes.
“I was part of that process, but I don’t think I deserve the compliments. First of all, it’s Mo’s choice and his agent’s choice for what he wants. Then the club, FSG, Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, they put in a lot of effort in him to extend. Effort mostly means money! But also effort, not only money!
“What it might tell you is that it’s not only a good season this season, we want to have a good season next season as well. I think Mo is convinced that there is a fair chance that we are able to do so. Again, that’s positive for us.”
