There’s no denying the marriage between King Charles and Queen Camilla has been a success, and the Queen reportedly gets along well with Prince William and Kate Middleton. But there’s also a lot of history there, with King Charles and Queen Camilla having an affair for years while he was still married to Princess Diana—and the loyalty his sons, particularly Prince William, who is set to become the next King, feel to their mother.
Now, King Charles is trying to cement Camilla’s place in the royal family, in a way that will live on even if he’s gone. The King formally bestowed the title of Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom on his wife on July 16, right before the Queen’s 78th birthday. She is the first woman to hold the honorary title.

The title can only be given on the nomination of the First Sea Lord, currently Sir Gwyn Jenkins. According to him, the Queen’s new role will “further enhance Her Majesty’s relationship with the Service.”
“We are honored to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to HM Naval Base Devonport,” he said in a statement. “Her Majesty’s visit has been a tremendous boost to morale, and the honorary appointment reflects the high regard in which Her Majesty is held by all of us.”
Previously, Charles famously named Camilla “Queen Consort” when he ascended the throne, England’s first in eight decades. Afterwards, he issued a Royal Warrant to change his wife’s title to “Queen Camilla” before their joint coronation.
This all comes as reports indicate William will “overhaul” the monarchy once he becomes King. According to the Times, he is looking to start by changing the coronation service to be “much simpler.” William is said to be “mindful of how much the monarchy costs” and would like the family to reflect modern life. “He wants to make sure the whole thing has even more impact and remains relevant,” a friend told the outlet.
“He has been thinking about the future for years, and he knows that what his grandmother did and what his father does is an evolution,” Jason Knauf, CEO of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, explained. “There are traditions and things that won’t change, but this thinking about the next [role] is how is this going to be reflective of him?”
Knauf added, “It’s all an evolution, making it work for what people expect of him and leaders of his generation.”
There have also been recent reports that William is not exactly on board with the possibility of reconciling with his brother, Prince Harry. That all seems to be King Charles. The Daily Beast reported that, according to a friend of William, “He absolutely f***ing hates” his brother Harry. That same source also told the outlet that. “William will never, ever forgive Harry for what he has done. Charles is the king; he can do what he likes. But make no mistake: William believes with every fiber of his being that giving Harry and Meghan back any royal imprimatur is a huge mistake.”
Does that mean this overhaul of the monarchy and the coronation has no place for Prince Harry? What about Queen Camilla? It’s all a waiting game now.
