Staffys are the dogs that are most likely to be stolen in Northern Ireland as police say work is ongoing to tackel dog thefts across the country.
From 2019 to 2024, there were 202 reports of stolen dogs to the PSNI with Staffordshire Bull Terriors being the dog targeted by thieves the most.
2021 saw the most dog thefts reported with 49, while 2024, saw the least amount of thefts reported. It comes as police say the Pet Abduction Act, which was introduced last year has seen the number of thefts reach an all-time low.

The Belfast city area saw the highest number of reported thefts during this period with 55, followed by the Newry, Mourne and Down area with 27.
PSNI lead for Animal Welfare and Wildlife Crime Superintendent Johnston McDowell said: “We understand that the theft of dogs is extremely distressing for owners and those who love and care for pets, and I can assure people that when reports of the theft of a treasured dog is received, it is treated seriously. It is reassuring to see that following the introduction of the Pet Abduction Act 2024, theft is now at an all-time low.
“We would encourage owners to microchip their pets or consider using a service that will store a sample of your dog’s DNA so that any stolen pet can be more easily reunited with its owner.
“Vigilance is also important in protecting your pet. Make sure your back garden or yard is secured and report any suspicious people or activity to police on 101, whereupon an investigation will be initiated.
