A large group of travellers have moved onto a Birmingham park.

It’s been reported that around 20 caravans, cars, vans and a flatbed truck drove onto Shard End Park, off Packington Avenue, on Thursday.

Images taken on Friday afternoon show the vehicles spread out across playing fields.

It is unclear if eviction proceedings are underway but when asked, a spokeswoman for the council said: “Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it.

“The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy – and details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website.”

A concerned passer-by said: “They were spread out across the park.

“The height barrier off Packington Avenue had been broken open.

“It looked to be 15-20 caravans and cannisters on the field.

“It’s really concerning and I’m worried about the mess.”
