Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard has predicted a dangerous future ahead as Carl and Abi Webster’s affair plot rolls on.

Newcomer Carl quickly hopped into bed with his brother’s wife, and is convinced that Abi is only staying with Kevin because of his cancer.

However, next week’s scenes see Carl learn that Kevin has received the all-clear and is lying about still needing chemotherapy. Kevin keeps Carl quiet with the knowledge that Carl is using the garage to do some dodgy deals with Fiona Morley.

Howard said he’s not sure whether Carl is “genuinely appalled” or “using the moral high ground” when it comes to his character’s reaction to Kevin’s lie, stating: “I’m sure if the shoe was on the other foot, Carl would do the same as his brother would. Absolutely.”

When it comes to the Abi affair, the actor added that Carl is still “enjoying the thrill of it and the chase of it… all of the excitement and fear of it really turns him on.”

He did note that there’s not only the danger of the affair tearing the family apart if exposed, but the possibility that Carl could get bored, especially if it becomes more serious. And if that happens, Carl could easily leave Abi to deal with all the mess by herself.

“I think she might start to feel a bit like that because she doesn’t know a lot about Carl,” Howard said.

“She is more emotionally invested in it, and she’s got more at risk,” he continued.

“Carl’s not been in Weatherfield very long. He can easily pack his bags and get on a plane and off he goes. For her, she’s got children, she’s got her whole life, her job, everything. She’s risking everything.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX and YouTube.
