Archer has scored in all three of Southampton’s pre-season friendlies to date, including a well-taken equaliser against Valenciennes at Staplewood.

Still wants to give the 23 year old the freedom to maximise his pace and off-the-ball movement after a barren run in front of goal.

Archer has gone nine months since his last league goal, with his lastest strike coming in a 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool in December.

Asked if Archer can score a lot of goals this season, Still told the Daily Echo: “Yeah, 100 per cent he can. He needs to go back to doing what he’s good at.

“He needs to go back to getting in behind and being in the box because the threat of his pace and movement is going to be important for us.

“It’s about giving him a bit of freedom and a bit of confidence to go and do that and get into the areas where he can finish actions off. That is what we need him for. ”

Archer is an instinctive finisher and operates best when his responsibilities solely take place inside the box.

He confessed he needs to regain his confidence in an interview with the club following his goal against Eastleigh last weekend.

The former England youth international also revealed that Still has put confidence in him ahead of a return to the Championship.

Another Saints player stepping back down to the second tier, where they have impressed before, is defender Nathan Wood.

The former Swansea City and Middlesbrough centre-back was the standout performer in Friday’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Valenciennes.

Still explained how the 23 year old is willing to learn a new way of playing, having received most of his individual joy in a possession-heavy system.

“They’ve all been really positive and open-minded to move on and learn and do something new and be a positive team again,” Still explained.

“Woody is just a reflection of that, I think. We are still making mistakes here and there, but that is to be expected. We will get them out of what they are doing,

“But as long as everyone stays positive and we are eager to learn from the mistakes, I’d rather make them now than during the course of the season.”
