Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, a Saudi Royal who spent two decades in a coma following a tragic car accident in London, has passed away, according to his father.

The eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, Prince Al Waleed was just 36 years old. Known as the “Sleeping Prince”, he had been in a coma for over 20 years after a devastating accident at the tender age of 15 while studying as a military cadet in London.

The accident resulted in severe brain injuries and internal bleeding for the young prince, and despite immediate medical attention, he never fully regained consciousness.

His grieving father confirmed the sad news on social media, stating, “With hearts believing in Alla”s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today.”

Funeral prayers for the late prince are set to take place on Sunday at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reports the Mirror.

A seperate prayer ceremony will be held for women at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital after Dhuhr prayers, local media has claimed.

There will also now be three days of mourning, until Tuesday.

The prince’s father, the brother of billionaire Saudi business tycoon Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, had long refused to give up on his son and insisted on monitoring his condition with hopes that he may one day wake up.

In 2020, there was a glimmer of hope when he appeared to move his hand, which was caught on camera.

In a clip shared on Twitter by Saudi princess Noura bint Talal Al-Saud and others, a woman was seen greeting the prince by the hospital bed. She said “Habibi, hello. Hello, hello let me see.”

Prince Khalid lifts up his fingers momentarily and puts it down. The woman continued: “Oh, one more, one more. Higher, higher.”

He appears to understand the request and is able to lift his right palm up shortly.

However, no other movements were reported in the years after that, and his death has now been confirmed.
