Year 7 pupil Mel Kemparen-Thomson from Samuel Ward Academy in Haverhill won the title at a literacy competition hosted by County High School in Bury St Edmunds, who were last year’s winners.

The event, organised by the Unity Schools Partnership, challenged students to answer questions about their favourite books before facing a general knowledge round.

Ben Godsal, secondary English subject lead at Unity, said: “It was great to see so many students showcase such a love of literacy in what was our biggest ever Book Mastermind – with more schools, students and supporters than ever before.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to event organiser, Mandy Harvey at County, and to all our schools and, most of all, our young people for putting themselves out there to represent their school and Trust in a fantastic way.”

This year’s competition featured six schools: Breckland School, County High School, Felixstowe School, Newmarket Academy, Samuel Ward Academy, and Thomas Gainsborough School.
