Leeds United urgently need to sign a new goalkeeper, but they will explore different options.

Newcastle star Nick Pope has been linked as a key target, and he would certainly bring a lot of experience if he was to join.

Leeds need to replace Illan Meslier if they are to survive in the Premier League, but question marks remain over whether Pope is the right candidate for such an important signing.

Pre-season has begun for both Leeds and Newcastle, and there were very contrasting defensive performances for both sides.

Leeds kept a clean sheet against Manchester United in a 0-0 draw to kick off their pre-season campaign, with Karl Darlow and Meslier playing one half each.

However, it was a different story for Pope as Newcastle played against Celtic, as Eddie Howe’s side fell to a shock 4-0 defeat.

Pope was directly at fault for two of the goals, one of which was such a disastrous mistake that it resembled Meslier’s crisis run of form from last season.

The 33-year-old had an inconsistent campaign for Newcastle, which is why they are considering selling and replacing him, but given his age, Leeds may question whether he is simply on the decline, and alternatives must be considered.

Pope is not the only goalkeeper linked with a move to Elland Road this summer, and three other options could be targeted instead.

Aaron Ramsdale is available following Southampton’s relegation last season, but despite his stock falling in the last year, the 26-year-old has shown a high level in the past at Arsenal, and would arrive with a lot of experience as he heads into his prime years.

Angus Gunn would be a surprising option, but the goalkeeper is available on a free transfer following his surprise release from Norwich City, and the 29-year-old has plenty of experience in the top two divisions under his belt as a cost-effective signing.

Lucas Perri has been linked amid uncertainty over his future at Lyon, and the 1.97-metre-tall Brazilian could be the best option, as an aerially dominant goalkeeper coming into his prime years.

There are younger options than Pope available, and Leeds must consider one of these before pushing for a move for the veteran.
