A two-time world champion has sent a scathing message to former unified welterweight champion Jaron Ennis.
‘Boots’ established himself as arguably the top welterweight in the world recently, first being elevated to IBF champion at the end of 2023 when former champion Terence Crawford vacated his crown.
The 28-year-old from Philadelphia would go on to make several successful defences of his title before he added the WBA belt to his collection earlier this year, stopping Lithuania’s Eimantas Stanionis in the sixth round of their bout in Atlantic City.
However, it has now been confirmed that Ennis has opted to vacate his welterweight belts to make a move up to super welterweight, and one man who has expressed an interest in facing the unbeaten American is two-time 147 champion Keith Thurman.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Thurman was asked if he would be interested in a showdown with ‘Boots’ as he claims he would fight ‘anybody in the world’.
“Of course. Enough money on the table man I’ll fight anybody in the world baby. You know he’s moving up I mean honestly, let’s take a breather real quick, don’t ever worry about Keith Thurman fighting people when the money’s right.”
Thurman then followed this up by calling Ennis the ‘biggest duck’ in boxing.
“Boots didn’t want Teofimo. Boots doesn’t want Ortiz. Hold up, champion. Hey champ. Chump. Who do you want? Someone told me the other day he wants to move up and have two tune-ups. Undefeated champion getting tune-ups.
“Man, the biggest duck is the Boots, the Boots is the biggest duck. How you get fights that put on the like, they’re just fights baby.”
Ennis has recently been linked with both Teofimo Lopez and Vergil Ortiz Jr. Although neither fight has materialised, promoter Eddie Hearn has guaranteed the Ortiz match-up will following his man’s debut at 154 later this year.
Thurman returned from a three year hiatus against Australia’s Brock Jarvis on March 12, stopping him in the third round of their bout in Sydney.
‘One Time’ is set to continue his transition into the 154lbs division, as he looks to make one more ring appearance before the end of the year, setting his sights on becoming a two-weight world champion.
