Six weeks of roadworks are due to start at a busy junction near the M32. From Monday, improvement works will begin on Coldharbour Lane in Filton – which is where the University of the West of England’s Frenchay campus is located – and at its junction with the A4174 ring road.
The main disruption for motorists will be the closure of the left turn from the ring road, which connects junction one of the M32 with the Gloucester Road, on to Coldharbour Lane. A signposted diversion route will be in place for Coldharbour Lane via Abbeywood Roundabout and a diversion route for Filton Road (eastbound) via the A4174.
During the roadworks, which are scheduled to last until the end of August, a new left turn lane will be installed from the A4714 on to Coldharbour Lane in a bid to ease traffic congestion. A new cycle and pedestrian path will also be built at the same junction.
A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said the works had been scheduled during the summer holidays to try to minimise disruption, and thanked drivers in advance for their understanding.
“We understand that any road closures can cause inconvenience, and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we complete these essential improvements,” the spokesperson said.
The Filton works are part of a busy summer of upgrades for Bristol’s road network. On July 14, closures were put in place on three of the city’s busiest roads.
The A4018 Passage Road in north Bristol remains closed southbound between Crow Lane roundabout and Charlton Road until August 1.
The three- week closure is part of an overall project to improve the reliability of the number 1 bus service through Henbury, and to make cycling safer.
Bath New Bridge near Temple Meads station is down to one lane until spring 2026 for essential repairs.
The partial closure will cause significant delays for drivers approaching the city centre on the A4.
Finally, Whiteladies Road is closed one-way travelling northbound from Victoria Methodist Church to its junction with Tyndalls Park Road and St Pauls Road, so that works to prevent flooding on the inundation-prone section of the road can take place.
The A4174 works in Filton are part of the broader A4174 improvement scheme. The overall project is scheduled to finish in January 2026.
