More than a dozen jam products have been recalled over an undeclared ingredient that may pose health risk to some consumers. Scottish brand Sarah Gray’s recalled 14 products that contain sulphites not mentioned on the label. Sulphites are a group of preservatives used in the production of some foods and drinks.
They can trigger allergy-like symptoms such as wheezing, tight chest and cough. When they interact with stomach acid, sulphur dioxide can cause the airway to become irritated and constricted. Less than 2% of people are thought to be allergic to sulphites, according to Allergy UK, but this rises to between five and 13% among people with asthma.
The recall issued by Fife-based Sarah Gray’s affected 14 jam products containing Prosecco or champagne, sold online and in a number of independent shops.
A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “These products contain undeclared sulphites making it a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.
“If you have bought the above products and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites do not eat them.
“Instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”
