A tornado struck Tours Val de Loire Airport (LFOT) in central France on Monday morning, July 21.
The French severe weather office Keraunos reported the tornado, called a low-topped superstorm cell, which is caused by warm, humid air in the lower portions of the atmosphere and strong winds.
The tornado was seen at the small regional airport, where two flights to Marseille and Marrakech were scheduled to arrive and depart. Keraunos’s report cited video confirmation of the tornado from the airport by witness Benjamin Bresnard (shown below).
It is unclear whether the flights were impacted, but FlightAware is only reporting two delays at the airport, both with the airport’s only air carrier, Ryanair.
It is expected that the tornado caused some damage to trees and shrubs.
The region of Centre-Val de Loire is currently under a yellow alert, which denotes moderate risk, of further storms tonight.
