Jannik Sinner has become used to having people talking about him, both in positive and negative ways.

Sinner won Wimbledon to lift his fourth Grand Slam title earlier this month, after beating rival Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

The world number one received a lot of praise for his performances at Wimbledon this year, including Sinner being told he has one shot that is the best in history.

Not all of the comments toward Sinner have been positive, and now a former Roland Garros semifinalist has called out something she has recently heard.

Before Sinner was the Grand Slam winning force that he is today, his Italian compatriot Martina Trevisan reached the semifinals of Roland Garros.

In an interview with fanpage.it, the now world number 276 Trevisan has spoken about how much she was rooting for Sinner against Alcaraz.

Trevisan also called out criticism of Sinner, as she suggested that she had heard people calling him unexciting to watch.

“Of course I watched it and I cheered for Jannik with all my heart,” said Trevisan. “He’s an extraordinary guy, and you can’t help but root for him, for the clean, sharp tennis he displays every time.

“Anyone who accuses him of having an unexciting style of play has probably never picked up a racket, because watching Jannik play, recognizing how he makes even the most complex movements appear simple, is a joy for the eyes and the heart.

“And I’m not just saying this as a fan, but also as a professional who knows how certain backhand down-the-line shots are a slap in the face of the laws of physics.”

While the Wimbledon final may not have been as much of a spectacle, Sinner and Alcaraz’s Roland Garros final has received high praise and been called one of the best in history.

Martina Trevisan explains how Jannik Sinner managed to bounce back from Roland Garros

Sinner was heartbroken against Alcaraz after the Roland Garros final, where he lost in five sets despite having three championship points.

When discussing how Sinner managed to get over his Roland Garros defeat, Trevisan praised his mental fortitude.

“Well, I believe that the best memory, the one that allowed Jannik to beat Carlos in four sets, is like a fine-meshed sieve that lets through what’s useless and harmful to growth and self-improvement, while retaining what’s useful and instrumental to change,” explained Trevisan.

“It takes great courage, a determined and positive mental attitude, to transform in a month what could have been a paralyzing trauma into an extraordinary victory.

“That’s why the mind is 80%: if you’re able to transform the ‘poison’ of a defeat into the ‘medicine’ needed for a victory, you have everything it takes to be a champion. In sports, of course, but above all in life.”

It is currently unclear when the world number one will next play a match, with Sinner already withdrawing from the Canadian Open.

Sinner is next scheduled to compete at the Cincinnati Open, which gets underway on Monday, August 4.
