Work across several rail lines will cause disruption in south Wales next month as some lines will be closed and diversions will be put in place. The major upgrades to the rail will take place across four areas and will see journey times extended on one service through Swansea for eight days.

To maintain and improve rail infrastructure, engineering work will take place across key rail corridors across the region. Between Saturday, August 2 and Monday, August 11 track renewals, drainage improvements, and essential maintenance will affect four areas.

The areas affected include:

  • Dynevor Junction to Morlais Junction
  • Jersey Marine to Hendy
  • Llangyfelach Tunnel and surrounding track sections
  • Penllergaer Tunnel to Grovesend

For eight days from Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 10, engineering work will be taking place between Briton Ferry and Llangennech. Never miss a Swansea story by signing up to our newsletter here

The work will mean that some lines will be closed, and trains running between Briton Ferry and Llangennech / Llanelli will be diverted to run via Gowerton.

Journey times on these services could be slightly extended due to the work during this time.

Drainage work will take place on Penllergaer Tunnel West to Morlais Junction from 1am, Saturday, August 2 to 7am on Monday, 11.

Llangyfelach Tunnel will have rerail works from 1am Saturday, August to 7am on Monday 11.

Dynevor Junction to Penllergaer Tunnel will also have work from 9.30pm on Thursday, August 7 to 7am on Monday, August 11.

Exams will take place on the Dynevor Junction to Morais Junction from 1am to 7am on Tuesday August 5, Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7.

Network Rail said: “The works will improve track reliability and see smoother journeys for passengers, while reducing the risk of service delays and the potential for anything going wrong with the infrastructure.

“They will also increase resilience against extreme weather.

“Network Rail is grateful for the patience and understanding of passengers while we complete this important work.”
