BBC Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has opened up about her relationship with Steve Randall, a police officer she married in 2021. Steve is fourteen years younger than Carol and the presenter said people like to “make a fuss” about this.
Speaking about her fifth novel ‘Meet Me at Sunset’, published this month, the 63-year-old told PA her husband is: “very romantic and very generous.” She added: “He’s just a lovely man. I pinch myself. I’m punching, I’m really punching.” However Carol also shared that Steve also believes he is the one “punching”.
Before the two were married, they were introduced as friends, Carol said it was “nice” getting to know him and described him as “kind”, as she discussed her novel.
Last year, when asked if Steve was happy to move in to her house when they decided to live together, the 62-year-old told The Times: “I offered to sell my home so we could buy a place together, but he’s happy living here. He’s a keeper. He’s a very good cook and tidy as well, tidier than I am.”
Carol, best known for being on TV as a weather presenter, is a best-selling author. She said: “There’s so many things going on in the world, it’s nice just to stick your nose in a book and forget about it for a time.”
The new novel is about a fashion designer called Camille Fontaine, who is “running away from a shattered love affair” and whose secret-filled past is on the brink of overflowing into her present. Giving an insight into what readers can expect, Carol commented “I really hope you think at the end of it, ‘I didn’t see that coming.”
One of eight children, Carol’s parents were hoteliers, and her adoration for glitz and glamour comes from watching Cary Grant, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn films growing up. She added: “These are the movies my mum would watch and enjoy, and they were always so glamorous – and then you’d see Marilyn Monroe.”
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant tries to look her “best” and stay “healthy”. Her reason for this is to have a “long life with my gorgeous husband, for as long as I can.”

Carol has started walking miles with Steve every weekend, and has cut out snacking from her diet, admitting: ” “I don’t know what it is, you sit down with a cup of tea and you think, ‘I’ll have a Twix’. Or in the evening, with a glass of wine, you think, ‘I want some Pringles.”
Steve popped the question during a romantic picnic by the River Thames near the couple’s home in Berkshire. Just over a year later, the couple said ‘I do’ in a stunning winter ceremony held at Cliveden House in Berkshire.
During an appearance on The One Show, she told hosts Alex Jones and Anita Rani: “It was the perfect day, it was a small intimate wedding, it was beautiful and very romantic but there was a storm, can you believe it? Storm Gerrit.”
She also spoke about her past relationships, saying: “I was married before (to property developer Jimmy Kirkwood, they split in 2008), and we got divorced, and it’s always sad when that happens.
“But of course, there isn’t such a thing I don’t think as a perfect romance, where you’re never going to fall out or have cross words. Of course you are, that’s life.” She added “I feel sad when relationships break down.”
