A ‘delicious’ Birmingham restaurant which served food with ‘an explosion of flavour’ has closed after just one year of being open.

Offering Mexican favourites of tacos and rice bowls, Zócalo was located on New Street, next to Tim Hortons.

The European restaurant chain has removed Birmingham from its list of sites and deleted New Street from the website.

When we went down to visit today (July 22) it was already being turned into a new eatery, set to open soon.

When we visited Zócalo in October, our reporter Zoe loved her ‘delicious’ visit and called her beef rice bowl as ‘an explosion of flavour’.

Zoe said: “This was so beautifully presented – a rainbow of colours in a bowl brimming with delicious healthy ingredients.

“I was half expecting it to be sectioned into beef, salsa, rice but it was all perfectly blended with just the avocado fanned along the side – a whole avo at that.

“This meant that every mouthful was an explosion of flavour, especially the marinated strips of beef, which were sensational.”

On Google Reviews, Zócalo had a near-perfect 4.9 score out of five stars, based on over 300 reviews.

A customer identified as Stevo said: “I decided to eat here with my work mates. The staff were very friendly.

“The food is amazing, portions and the quality, amazing. I highly recommend eating here.”

Diana added: “Amazing healthy food, service is really good.

“Very accommodating for vegan options, so you can have pretty much everything.”

And a different reviewer posted: “Best Mexican in town.”

BirminghamLive has approached Zócalo for comment.
