Visitors to a popular city park are being urged to avoid water in its lake. Officials have revealed how blue-green algae has been detected at Hanley Park.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council says it can be harmful to both people and pets. It’s liable to cause ‘skin rashes and serious illness if swallowed’.

Now the local authority has urged visitors to avoid any contact with the water – and to keep dogs on leads. According to the Environment Agency and it can make water less clear – blocking sunlight and stopping plants from growing.

It can also produce toxins which harm wild animals along with domestic pets and the council has warned it can also cause issues for people if contact is made or if the water is swallowed.
