Mateo Joseph’s future has been a major talking point at Leeds United this summer following their promotion to the Premier League.

The attacker was little more than a squad player for the Whites last term, but speculation surrounding his future has dominated large chunks of their summer as they prepare to return to the top flight.

Joseph has been seemingly on the verge of leaving Leeds on several occasions, but his exit still hasn’t materialised.

Daniel Farke knows he needs to add depth to his side’s attack, and that is unlikely to leave any place for someone like Joseph, who is still developing as a player.

Leeds recently provided a surprising twist to Joseph’s future by insisting that he isn’t for sale this summer, despite all the previous interest in him.

He had been heavily linked with a move to Real Betis for several weeks, while Celta Vigo and Birmingham City had also shown an interest in signing the 21-year-old.

Joseph now appears to have taken matters into his own hands and has handed in a transfer request as he looks to force through a move to Spain, according to Graham Smyth via X (22 July).

The forward has made his feelings clear to Leeds and is also understood to have failed to take up Farke on his recommendation to travel with the squad to Germany for their upcoming training camp.

The Whites will now surely be left with no option but to sell the wantaway star, rather than keep him around the squad and risk him damaging the togetherness and morale of the dressing room.

Given Betis’ interest in Joseph from earlier in the window, it would be a huge surprise if they didn’t come back in for him again, especially now that they can offer the prospect of a reunion with his former teammate Junior Firpo.

The left-back’s move to the Seville-based outfit will surely make them an even more attractive option for Joseph, given that he now has someone within their squad who he already knows well.

Leeds need to get Joseph out the door

The 49ers will have ambitious plans for the West Yorkshire outfit on their return to the top table of English football, and it is crucial that they get the likes of Joseph out of the door in order to make room for top-quality replacements.

The Spanish youth international still has plenty of room to develop, but he surely would have seen even less gametime this term than he did in the Championship, which makes it a no-brainer for the hierarchy to grant him his request.

He will essentially be a waste of a wage if Leeds move him on before the season gets underway, and you simply cannot afford that while you are competing in the lower reaches of the Premier League.
