We might be in the height of summer right now, but as the wheel of time continues to turn we’ll no doubt be back around to the depths of January sooner than we know it. If you know that struggle with the darker season, it might be worth booking yourself an early treat as something to look forward to when the days are shorter than our working hours.

A fantastic feel-good show that might just cure those January Blues is musical ‘The Bodyguard‘, which is headed to Manchester’s Palace Theatre for two weeks at the start of 2026. Starring Sidonie Smith and Adam Garcia, it’s based on the hit 2992 movie of the same name where a former Secret Service agent is tasked with protecting a singer and actress from an incessant stalker.

In typical fashion, the two fall in love, setting the stage for a musical romance story that’s filled with laughs. As Whitney Houston starred in the original movie, most of the songs are based on her work, with highlights including Million Dollar Bill, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and, of course, I Will Always Love You.

Be warned though – although the music might be iconic, the audience is banned from singing along at this show out of respect for the performers and other audience members. An incident occurred in 2023 when an audience member was removed from the show after ‘screaming’ along to the music, causing the final 10 minutes of the show to be cut short.

Our colleague Dianne Bourne previously reviewed The Bodyguard when it came to Manchester in 2023, writing: “There’s no doubting it’s an enjoyable show featuring as it does the genius soundtrack of the late, great Whitney with her classic hits like One Moment in Time and All At Once alongside those famous from the film like Run To You and I Have Nothing.”

However, she did also note that the performance she attended was rife with technical glitches which somewhat marred the experience at the time: “In opening night here in Manchester there were way too many technical glitches, including a five minute stoppage when a set malfunctioned. There were also moments where songs didn’t start properly with microphones cutting out, which hampered the flow for this to be the sort of polished performance I’d expect, having seen the first, flawless touring production here back in 2019.”

The show will open in Manchester’s Palace Theatre on January 19 and will run for 14 showings until Saturday, January 31. It’s worth noting that Rachel Marron will be played by Mireia Mambo at select performances.
