xAI begins installing computing infrastructure at ‘Colossus 2′

  • 22 July 2025

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – xAI has begun installing computing infrastructure at its expanded data center property in Southwest Memphis.

The new facility on Tulane Road, dubbed “Colossus 2,” will incorporate a minimum of one million Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) once completed by 2026.

On Tuesday, xAI Memphis posted to X announcing that 110,000 GPUs are in the process of being installed, which will be “powered by a diverse array of energy sources, similar to Colossus.”

In mid-February we broke ground at our new data center at Tulane in Shelby County, Tennessee. We have begun deploying the initial phase of computing infrastructure.

These include Tesla Megapacks, which the company says will provide critical support during peak demand periods, “ensuring a stable power supply while safeguarding Shelby County residents from potential blackouts.”

Colossus 2 is expected to be powered within the next few weeks.

The Greater Memphis Chamber said in May that there were no plans to install gas turbines at this site.
