Tyson Fury has been discussing the future of the heavyweight division and how it might look.
Right now, the division is seeing plenty of change. Fury himself retired back in January, having been a WBC champion for many years, but lost his belts to Oleksandr Usyk in May 2024 and failed to win them back in December. That led him to walk away from the sport, although he has once again begun teasing a return and called out Usyk for a trilogy fight next April.
Former two-time unified champion Anthony Joshua is edging towards 40 and has been out since his September KO loss to Daniel Dubois. Though he is expected to return, he won’t have many fights left. The same goes for Usyk, now 38. He has dominated in recent years but won’t be around forever, while Derek Chisora has always said he will bow out after his next contest, once he gets to 50 fights in total.
One man tipped for the top in the future is 20-year-old Moses Itauma, who fights another of the old guard, Dillian Whyte, in August, off the back of knockout wins over the likes of Mariusz Wach and Demsey McKean, both inside two rounds.
Speaking to JNMEDIAUK, Fury also recently expressed his belief that Agit Kabayel is ready to shine in the heavyweight division.
“F*** that, f*** fighting him. Agit’s taking over now, it’s takeover time.”
32-year-old Kabayel is an in-form fighter who stopped Zhilei Zhang last time out in February with a body shot, and before that has stopped Frank Sánchez, Arslanbek Makhmudov and beaten Chisora on points. He has said he would relish a shot at Usyk sometime soon, but is one of several contenders hoping to face the Ukrainian.
