Jake Paul is currently eyeing up his next opponent.
‘The Problem Child’ was in action last month when defeating former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision, and has now been linked with a shock showdown against ex-unified heavyweight king Anthony Joshua.
Both sides have said they are open to the clash, with Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh claiming that Paul has already agreed to the fight, but there could be another former world heavyweight champion that the YouTuber-turned-boxer is now targeting.
That man in question is Deontay Wilder, the former WBC heavyweight champion who got back to winning ways earlier this summer with a stoppage win over Tyrrell Herndon.
Prior to that, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ had lost four of his last five fights, but most fight fans would still believe that he has far too much for Paul if they were to indeed meet.
Wilder’s former trainer Malik Scott has now commented on the potential match-up, telling Thunderpick that he’s spoken to Paul’s team and they seem serious about the clash.
“Jake is dead serious about the Deontay Wilder fight. I’ve been in New York for the Katie Taylor fight and I just met Jake Paul’s partner [Nakisa Bidarian], literally three minutes ago. And the first thing he said was, ‘we’re interested in the Deontay Wilder fight’. He asked me, ‘what do I think of it?’ They’re just so serious. Some of the things that he said confidently to me, really makes you know that they’re not fake confident, they really are confident [in defeating Wilder].
“I don’t know if it will ever materialise into something, but they’re on to something, this whole Jake Paul thing, and I believe the key to their success is timing. But we’re talking about Jake in the ring with Deontay Wilder, it just makes no sense at all. But unfortunately Jake Paul is a big money guy in the sport of boxing right now.”
With Paul expected to return to the ring before the end of the year, a decision on his next opponent will be expected soon.
