Danny Rohl has been expected to leave Sheffield Wednesday for the past week but still remains in the job, and EFL Analysis can shed some light on why that is.

It’s been a very complex summer for Sheffield Wednesday, to say the least. While ongoing financial issues and subsequent transfer bans threaten to plunge the club into a relegation battle, the managerial situation in S6 is no less messy.

Danny Rohl had put himself forward for various jobs this summer, including Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Leicester City. However, with no success on that front, he performed a dramatic U-turn and returned to pre-season preparations with the Owls.

It was not a positive return for the German, though. Sheffield Wednesday players were unhappy with Rohl for the way he had neglected them this summer, and had made it clear they no longer wanted to work with him.

Last week, we broke the news that Sheffield Wednesday chiefs had decided to part ways with Rohl after realising the relationships at Hillsborough could not be repaired, deeming the manager’s position as ‘untenable’.

Now, we have the latest on the situation from our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, who tells us complications have arisen in getting Rohl out of the door.

EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that the players and the hierarchy are still set on parting ways with Rohl, but due to the cost of releasing him from his contract, it will not be easy.

We were led to believe that Rohl’s assistant, Henrik Pedersen, would be stepping in as his replacement. But, in a surprise twist, we understand Pedersen is actually keen for Rohl to stay at the club, which is playing a part in delaying the final decision.

It’s thought Rohl is also not in total agreement with the proposal from the club in terms of a release package. Apparently, Rohl would rather be paid off in a clean break, rather than being tied to a gardening leave scenario.

Once the Danny Rohl situation is resolved, the Owls can really start to focus on the season ahead. Preparation for the 2025/26 campaign is key for Wednesday now, with a relegation battle surely on the cards.

It is thought the fire sale at Sheffield Wednesday is now over, which is good news. Still, having lost Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Djeidi Gassama, and Anthony Musaba, it’s not been a kind summer for the Owls.

For most Wednesday fans, locking in the legendary Barry Bannan to a new contract will be absolutely crucial, though. If he were to leave the club, that would be the final hammer blow for Dejphon Chansiri amid the current vitriol coming his way from the supporter base.
