German business activity continued its modest growth trajectory in July, albeit at a slightly reduced pace compared to June, according to a recent report. The survey highlighted that manufacturing output has expanded for the fifth consecutive month, while services activity has stabilized. The HCOB German flash composite Purchasing Managers Index, compiled by S&P Global, dipped slightly to 50.3 points in July from 50.4 in June, falling short of the 50.7 predicted in a Reuters poll.

Despite the composite index hovering just above the 50.0 mark, which delineates growth from contraction, the services sector achieved a four-month high of 50.1. This improvement slightly surpassed expectations, as the forecast was pegged at 50.0. Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector, though still below the growth threshold at 49.2, showed signs of recovery, inching up from 49.0 in the previous month and narrowly missing the anticipated 49.5.

Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank, noted the persistent fragility in the manufacturing sector, as indicated by the PMI’s position below 50. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism about the sector’s production, which has been on an upward trend for five months. De la Rubia also pointed out that the service sector is no longer hindering economic progress, with July witnessing the first rise in new business in nearly a year.

According to data from IndexBox, the outlook for the German economy aligns with expectations of increased real wages and expansionary fiscal policies, which are anticipated to bolster the sector’s overall recovery.
