The Old Contemptibles, a beloved city centre pub with deep historical roots, is welcoming guests following a major refurbishment by Nicholson’s Pubs Collection.

Located in the heart of Birmingham’s Colmore Business District, The Old Contemptibles has long been a favourite meeting place for locals, commuters, and history enthusiasts alike. Now, thanks to a significant investment and a comprehensive renovation, the landmark venue is set to offer guests an even more inviting and versatile experience.

The pub takes its name from the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) of World War I, who proudly adopted the term “The Old Contemptibles” after Kaiser Wilhelm II reportedly referred to them as “that contemptible little army.” The pub itself has seen many identities through the centuries, originally opening as the Adelphi Wine Vaults in the late 1700s, becoming the Albion Hotel in 1880, and finally adopting its current name in 1953, in honour of the war veterans who once gathered there.

The refurbishment has breathed new life into the building while preserving its historic character. A key highlight of the renovation is the transformation of an upstairs space, unused since the mid-1980s, into ‘The Expedition Room’, a stylish new area equipped with its own bar, ideal for private dining, meetings and special occasions. Downstairs, ‘The Campaign Room’, a snug and cosy retreat, has been redesigned to offer a welcoming space to relax with friends or colleagues. Both areas are now available for bookings.

Of course, no Nicholson’s pub would be complete without a proper British menu. Guests can continue to enjoy favourites such as their signature pies, alongside an extensive drinks list featuring craft beers, world lagers, a curated gin selection, and the specially brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale.

General Manager Rob Burrill expressed his excitement about the reopening, saying:

“I’m absolutely thrilled, we’ve breathed fresh life into the building with a stunning new upstairs space that offers something truly special – more room to relax, celebrate and enjoy everything that makes a great British pub. But more important to me is what hasn’t changed. We’ve kept the heart and soul of The Old Contemptibles intact – its history, character and charm that locals and visitors have come to love over the years.”

With its thoughtful restoration and new amenities, The Old Contemptibles is set to remain a cherished destination for both regulars and new visitors alike.
