News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Age Cymru Dyfed and Age Cymru has launched a new e-learning course aimed at improving support for older Armed Forces veterans across the UK.

An event took place recently at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, bringing together veterans who helped develop the training alongside its creators, Fantom Factory.

The course is part of the three-year Building Stronger Futures for Older Veterans project, funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. It aims to meet the needs of the UK’s growing population of older veterans, nearly 590,000 of whom are aged over 80.

Designed for frontline staff in the NHS, local authorities, and voluntary sectors, the free course takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete. It is available in English and Welsh, ensuring accessibility across Wales and the wider UK.

Peter Hamilton, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Age Cymru Dyfed, said: “This training empowers professionals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older veterans. By recognising their service and connecting them to the support networks they deserve, we can reduce isolation, improve wellbeing, and ultimately ease pressure on healthcare services.”

The training encourages preventative care by helping professionals properly identify veterans entering health or care services. It promotes adding a veteran medical marker to their records and linking them to community and third-sector support networks.

These measures are expected to reduce hospital readmissions, combat loneliness, and strengthen community connections.

The project marks a significant step in recognising the lifelong contribution of older veterans and ensuring they receive the respect and care they have earned.
