A man has been arrested after a “gunshot was fired” in Edinburgh, with another man rushed to hospital.

The 36-year-old has been arrested after a 23-year-old man was taken to hospital on Thursday afternoon following the alleged incident on Hailesland Gardens in Westerhailes.

The 23-year old sustained injuries to his arm but no one else was injured.

Armed officers and uniformed police locked down the residential area and a police presence will continue as they carry out full enquiries.

A spokesperson for the force said: “A man has been arrested as enquiries continue into a report of a firearm being discharged in Edinburgh.

“Officers were called to attend the Hailesland Gardens area around 3.40pm on Thursday, 24 July, 2025.

“A 23-year-old man attended hospital for treatment to injuries sustained to his arm from the incident. No one else was injured.

“Officers, including specialist firearms officers, attended and a search of the area was carried out.

“A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection and enquiries are ongoing.

Earlier we reported a vehicle was left burnt out on a nearby housing estate.

Footage from Hailesland Grove shows what little remains of the vehicle which suffered significant damage from being torched while parked outside dozens of homes.

Images from the scene shows a police car behind the shell of the burnt out vehicle, although it has yet to be confirmed if the incidents are linked.

One resident on the street, speaking anonymously, told Edinburgh Live: “It’s absolutely terrifying to live here… we don’t know if the car fire is related to the shooting but hopefully they find this person.

“There are lots of children in the area and they need to be protected.”

Firearms officers were also pictured patrolling a footpath near Hailesland Grove with the area taped off.

“A continued police presence will remain in the area.”
