Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo may be the next star to leave the club after Tottenham were told to explore a possible move for the 20-year-old.

Marcus Rashford left Man United this week to join Barcelona, and Mainoo could be the next player that came through the club’s academy to depart.

Mainoo is currently negotiating a new contract at Man United, but talks have stalled over his wage demands prompting calls for Spurs to explore a move.

The midfielder made his Premier League debut in November 2023 and his impressive performances earned him a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad, but his career has stalled recently triggering the possibility of a fresh start elsewhere.

Mainoo is currently in the USA with United for the club’s pre-season tour, where they will face Premier League rivals West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.

United defender Leny Yoro took to his Instagram to share pictures of the squad in Chicago with the caption, “Chicago mode,” which was liked by team mate Mainoo alongside captain Bruno Fernandes and new signing Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo has been one of manager Ruben Amorim’s top targets this summer, and Man United finally agreed a deal with Brentford for the Cameroon international after two previously rejected bids.

Amorim must make Mainoo decision

Football Insider Verdict

Mainoo is one player who could leave Man United this summer to fund a squad rebuild for Amorim, after their disastrous 15th placed Premier League finish last season.

Amorim has failed to make an impact at Old Trafford since replacing Erik ten Hag last November, but is hoping new signings Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha can help change his fortunes at the club.

The Portuguese manager though still needs more additions to his squad and departures will be required to free up space in his budget.

Mainoo was seen as one of the club’s finest young prospects, with the 20-year-old impressing at club and international level.

Under Amorim, Mainoo has not been a regular starter for the club and was not selected in the starting line-up for their Europa League final clash with Spurs.

Amorim preferred Fernandes and Casemiro in the middle of the park, implying the experienced pair are ahead of Mainoo in the pecking order.
