Director James Cameron was spotted at the Billie Eilish concert in Manchester on Wednesday (July 23) – after the singer confirmed she was working with him on a ‘very special’ project.

At the first of four sold-out shows at Co-Op Live on July 19, Eilish hinted to fans that the veteran director, of Aliens, Titanic and Avatar fame, was ‘in the audience somewhere’ and that the Manchester shows would be ‘part of a thing’ they were making together.

“You may have noticed that there are more cameras than usual,” she told the crowd. “I can’t say much about it but I’m working on something very, very special with James Cameron and it’s going to be in 3D.”

At Eilish’s final gig on July 23, the 70-year-old himself was spotted by an eagle-eyed fan – who said he was a bigger fan of the director than Eilish herself.

Manchester resident James, 28, bought the tickets as a surprise for his partner. “I’m a massive movie fan – Aliens is one of my favourite films of all time,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

“When we heard Cameron was going to be there, I wondered if we would see him. I’m a huge fan so I know what he looks like.

“We were on the front row and to our right there was a sound desk. There was a big black sheet covering most of it, but through a gap you could see four huge monitors.

“There was this middle-aged guy there with white hair, white goatee and 3D glasses on and he was doing that thing that directors do – making a rectangle with his hands.

“If you’d asked me to do an impression of a director, that’s exactly what he was doing. He had an ear piece and seemed to be directing the cameras.

“I went to my partner, that is James Cameron, 30 feet away from us! It was so cool.

“There were 20,000 people looking at Billie – the whole show was really good but I was probably the only one looking at him.”

It’s not yet been announced what the pair are working on or what form it will take, but Eilish’s fans speculate it could be for a documentary or feature film.

“He was clearly involved somehow,” said James. “He had four 30 inch monitors surrounding him.”

“He must have been one of the only middle aged guys at the venue – surrounded by thousands of teenage girls!”
