An army bomb squad descended on a house in Southport this afternoon after a suspicious item was found. People living in Southport said they saw police going into a house on Hart Street today, July 25.

Merseyside Police had been executing a search warrant at a property when they discovered an item which was “subject to further examination”.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) from the army were called to assist and confirmed the item was a disused firework.

Merseyside police said the address will be retained for a further search tomorrow. A spokesperson for the force confirmed there was “no concern for anyone’s safety”.

Photos seen by the ECHO showed a large police presence alongside a bomb disposal vehicle, with officers stationed outside a property.
