Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) recently welcomed 80 secondary school students on campus to experience some practical computing workshops in: Scratch, Web Development, Programming and Games Development.

Two groups of 40 students had the opportunity to attend a three-day event which gave them fantastic exposure to the facilities available within DkIT and the potential future opportunities and various areas of study available to them.

The camps were run by the Computing Departments in DkIT and led by Retention and Recruitment Officer Niall Dowd, along with the support of student mentors from a variety of the Institute’s computing courses. Working alongside current students Gracie Chaudhary, Elizabeth Tuzhilina, Ryan Habis and Jeremy Meadows was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn first-hand from current students about their different areas of study.

Over the first two days, attendees had the opportunity to try out the four different subject areas. On the final day, the students were able to choose the area that was most interesting to them, and alongside their mentors, had the opportunity to develop a personal project to explore that area in more detail. The camp finished off with a final showcase of the projects with the opportunity to present to their peers.

Speaking after the courses, Retention and Recruitment Officer Niall Dowd said:

“It was great to have visiting students on campus and show them all that DkIT has to offer in areas such as software, web and games development. The events would not be possible without the team of student tutors who are simply fantastic and bring so much fun and enthusiasm to the workshops. It was brilliant to see so much interest in the computing topics from our attendees and I really hope to see them studying in DkIT in the not-so-distant future.”
