Former St Helens man Lewis Dodd now in the NRL

Former St Helens man Lewis Dodd started just his second NRL game as South Sydney Rabbitohs lost to Cronulla Sharks.

Dodd was given his preferred number seven jersey, playing alongside Jack Wighton in the halves.

Despite a late try from prop Tevita Tatola, who then left the field with what looked like a pectoral injury, the Bunnies lost out 14-12.

Whilst it wasn’t his finest performance, it also wasn’t Souths’ best showing either, but considering their season, a 2-point loss feels like a victory.

It felt like Dodd was playing a supporting role to Wighton and fullback Jye Gray for most of the match, but he did have the majority of the kicking responsibility, getting 566 metres.

However, he was taken off in the 68th minute and replaced by hooker Ryan Gray, who only made his debut for the Bunnies last month.

What’s next for the former St Helens man with his NRL future up in smoke?

The question now is, where does the former St Helens halfback go from here? Does he wait it out at Souths, does he look for an NRL contract elsewhere, or does he return to Super League?

His lack of playing time has been a hot topic all season, with him being overlooked on most occasions by Souths head coach Wayne Bennett and only selected when several ahead of him in the halfback pecking order have been injured or away on State of Origin duty.

The fact that Dodd was signed before Bennett moved back to Souths is one of the main reasons for him not selecting him, but the 23-year-old has been biding his time, playing in the NSW Cup most weeks.

There are plenty of clubs in Super League on the hunt for a halfback, and considering his lack of game time in the NRL, it seems unlikely that another club would take a chance on him, unless they have a history with the halfback.
